The doctor of nursing practice advanced practice nurse: Education, roles and practice issues

Abstract

This chapter reviews the development of advanced practice nursing with a focus on the practice doctorate and the major issues related to the development, the implementation, and the future of the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree. Numerous stakeholders both within and outside the profession of nursing have provided input and leadership in the rapid development of the DNP degree and programs. The leadership of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) assumed the primary role of conceptualizing the DNP degree based on an urgent national need for radical changes in health care delivery and how health care professionals of educated for practice. Through ongoing vision and political savvy, AACN has led the national movement for DNP education. Other professional organizations such as the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty (NONPF) and specialty organizations have influenced and contributed to the shaping of the practice doctorate in nursing. Many questions are still unanswered about the DNP degree, curriculum, and roles of graduates, but the evolution of the DNP degree and graduate is sure to continue along a rapid path of development.
