Abstract
Several storage and retrieval technologies are presently available, including CD-ROMs, digital versatile disks (DVD), the Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) and the vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). Several constraints exist, however, which limit their efficiency such as low data transfer rates, complicated system packaging, low system reliability and high costs. Possible optoelectronic packaging technologies that can provide the much needed compactness and light weight to future parallel readout optical heads are discussed. Based on these technologies' characteristics, possible data rates that can be achieved over the next decade by volumetric optical disk systems are also discussed along with their potential applications.
