Abstract

As the subspecialty of forensic psychiatry continues to grow (Engstrom 2009), geriatric forensic psychiatry (also called “geroforensic psychiatry”) will foreseeably become a eld of ever-increasing import for two key reasons. First, the elderly population of developed nations is rapidly rising. In the United States, for instance, the elderly population will likely double between 2000 and 2050 (U.S. Census Bureau 2008). Second, medical and psychiatric knowledge are increasing at such a rate that by 2020, medical knowledge might double every 73 days (Denson 2011).
