Abstract

A retrospective study of 18 patients operated on for myxomas of the heart is presented. The presenting feature was fever of unknown origin in 11% of the cases. The pre and intra-operativee findings showed an incidence of 28% of intracardiac associated anomalies. Of these there is an unusual association of mitral stenosis and left atrial myxomas (21%) (C:L ≥ 6% - p 0.025). The operative steps are explained and its dangers emphasized. The patient were divided in 2 groups.A and B, according to whethery they had removal of the interatrial septum or not. No operative death in either group was observed and morbidity was 5% in group A and none in group B (p non significant). Late follow up in group A was 46 months and in group B 44 months. There was no late complications in either group. The conclusion is that the operative treatment of myxomas of the heart is safe, and that these patients prognosis is good. There is no need for routine full-thickness excision of the septum.
