    Abstract

Several plasmids of the W incompatibility group were examined by electron microscope heteroduplex analysis. They were all conjugative plasmids of about 20 × 106 daltons even though isolated from different bacterial species in different parts of the world. One stretch of DNA of about 13 × 106 daltons was common to all W plasmids. This region included genes associated with plasmid transfer. The various drug resistance genes, including a known transposition sequence, were clustered in a single region of the W plasmid chromosome.
