Development of an Abbreviated Fonr of the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire for Adolescents

This article reports the development of an abbreviated version of the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire for Adolescents (AEQ-A) that has acceptable psychometric properties. A sample of seventh graders was split randomly into two halves, and the abbreviated version was developed using the two halves of the sample, including cross validation with half of the sample. All 90 items of the seven original AEQ-A subscales were administered to both halves of the sample. After psychometric processing, five abbreviated subscales (combined, 27 items) were retained Analyses showed that the abbreviated subscales had acceptable internal consistency and were related to other measures of substance use in a manner similar to the original subscales. Intercorrelations among the subscales were lower for the abbreviated subscales than for the original subscales.
