Abstract
Single crystals of La4Au2O9 have been obtained by reacting Au2O3 × 2H2O with La(OH)3 applying elevated oxygen pressures and hydrothermal conditions (p(O2)=70 MPa, T=873 K). The title compound is tending strongly to mimetic twinning (Pbcn; a=1212.16(4), b=631.99(2), c=1210.67(4) (pm); Z=4; 2024 unique reflections; R=0.027). Approximately square planar AuO4 units are stacked to form a columnar arrangement; they are connected to each other three-dimensionally by LaO7 polyhedra. One of the oxygen atoms is connected exclusively to lanthanum atoms. There are structural relations to Bi2CuO4.
