Abstract

The search for a magical cure may be one stage in a parent's adjustment to the diagnosis of a developmental disability in his or her child. The parent may try controversial treatments as part of this search. In this article, the author discusses the reasons parents chose alternative treatments, reviews a few specific treatments, and provides recommendations to professionals on how to talk to families about controversial therapies.
