Abstract
Perimenopause is a dynamic period in a woman's life. It takes place over an extended period of time and is a process rather than an event. Primary care physicians should use this life-phase transition as an opportunity to explore potential biopsychosocial changes in a female patient's life. Issues to explore include health-risk assessment and common discomforts, perceptions, and therapeutic options. Perimenopause has a biologic basis but is influenced strongly by other factors, including social and cultural factors.
