Abstract

Cathepsin B-1 and D activity in lymphocytes obtained from 25 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with various degrees of disability due to the disease and from a similar number of control subjects were studied. No differences were found between the enzyme activities of cells obtained from MS patients and controls. Age, sex and the degree of disability in the patients at the time of testing did not correlate with the enzyme activities found. The results from the present study are discussed in relation to the probable role played by lymphocytes in the demyelination process.
