N2 - As Posner stated in 1949, the bottom line "to the patient and to his family is .... whether his disease will follow a mild course or will lead to blindness" [98]. The final goal of genetic research is the identification of the causal genes in the patient, to aid the ophthalmologist in predicting the outcome, in determining diligent treatment is required, and ultimately, in providing the tools for preventing blindness.
