Abstract
Chemical dependence is a disease. With institution and maintenance of an active recovery program, the prognosis is good, and many health care workers are able to successfully return to the hospital environment. By facilitating entry of chemically dependent personnel into recovery programs and structured reentry into the workplace, department directors can promote both health and safety within their departments.
