Abstract

Patients using certain topical ocular medications may have significant systemic reactions such as depression, suicide ideation, cardiac failure, respiratory distress, or myocardial infarction. To reduce systemic effects of anticholinergics, use small amounts of ointment rather than drops, wipe excess from the eye immediately, use a more dilute concentration, and apply pressure over the lacrimal sac.
