Abstract

To the Editor: Eriksson et al. (N Engl J Med 296:263, 1977) concluded that “propranolol does not prevent thyroid storm” on the basis of two recent cases that they reported. We believe this important conclusion cannot be derived from their case reports. The authors state, “In the two patients described below, thyroid storm developed on seemingly adequate propranolol therapy for thyrotoxicosis.” The word “seemingly” is the rub. Both patients were given 40 mg of propranolol four times a day — a modest dose, especially in the face of the rapid turnover of most drugs in thyrotoxicosis. Also, there is.
