Presence of cysteinyldopa in the mature bovine eye

Abstract

The concentration of dopa, dopamine and cysteinyldopa were measured in various parts of the mature bovine eye, using a fluorescent assay. Special attention was paid to cysteinyldopa levels, since this compound is thought to be a specific marker of melanin turnover. Levels of cysteinyldopa in the iris and choroid/retinal pigment epithelium were indicative of the presence of active melanin synthesis in the adult eye. This data is presented as confirmatory evidence for the recent documentation of active tyrosinase activity in adult mammalian uveal tracts.
