Abstract

This study suggests the most effective method of instilling ophthalmic preparations to optimally prolong ocular contact time. In the upright position infero temporal conjunctival fornix instillation followed by closing the lids, and compression of the lacrimal sac are suggested. If recumbent, placing the drop infero temporally or supero temporally in the lower eye of the patient positioned on his side with eyes closed is most effective. These application techniques allow the medication to act as a reservoir, thereby increasing ocular contact time.
