Abstract

Drug repositioning, or finding new uses for existing compounds, is a novel approach to drug development, with great potential for reducing the time and cost of bringing a new treatment to the market. The mission of the CTSA Pharmaceutical Assets Portal has been to facilitate collaborations between industry and academic investigators for discovery of new indications for compounds that are no longer being actively developed by pharmaceutical companies. While the ultimate goal of creating a shared repository accessible to the academic community remains to be achieved, to date, the Pharma Portal has created an infrastructure that includes a national database of principal investigators with their respective biological models and delivery systems; a foci-of-expertise collaboration tool; a facility to house and maintain a compound repository; and a funding partner for repositioning studies. In summary, the Pharma Portal has created a strategy and a mechanism to support future opportunities for public-private partnerships in drug repositioning.
