On the use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to study the mechanism(s) of ethanol action

Abstract

In this review the authors attempt to introduce NMR to the field of ethanol research. Preliminary data obtained in their laboratories illustrate the usefulness of NMR both to examine the ethanol-induced membrane perturbation and to measure the partitioning of ethanol to the membrane. Overall, these data suggest that NMR not only confirms and extends results obtained with other biophysical techniques such as FPZ and ESR but also opens up new directions for future ethanol research.
