Abstract

Ketoconazole is the first oral antifungal with broad-spectrum activity. Single daily oral dosing and good patient tolerance allow out-patient therapy of deep mycoses with effectiveness similar to amphotericin B. In dermatophytosis, ketoconazole compares favorably with griseofulvin while providing an extended spectrum against candidiasis and tinea versicolor. If present indications remain and long-term safety is assured, ketoconazole may become a very useful and versatile therapeutic agent in fungal disease.
