Is the maternal pulse rate an adequate predictor of the effectiveness of betamimetic tocolysis?

Abstract

Clinicians consider the maternal pulse rate (MHR) an adequate index for assessment of the tocolytic effect of betamimetic drugs. To verify this assumption we compared the MHR before and during I.V. and oral ritodrine administration in patients with recurrent preterm labor. Our findings indicate that uterine escape in patients undergoing constant-dose infusion is associated with a small decrease of the MHR, but although the mean deceleration is statistically significant, we doubt that the pulse decrease is a useful predictor for recurrence of uterine motility. In patients taking ritodrine orally the decrease of the MHR was not significant.
