    Abstract

In a previous study, we found that the serum ionized calcium concentration decreased during septic shock in the baboon. In the experiments reported here, we found that the skeletal muscle extracellular pool of calcium decreased as well, to levels which were almost half of baseline values. This combination of decreased serum ionized calcium concentration and decreased extracellular pool of calcium could contribute to the cellular and metabolic abnormalities of septic shock.
