Abstract

Clozapine's efficacy, side effect profile, and cost raise numerous clinical, administrative, and ethical concerns. The author presents mathematical models to determine the optimal time for an efficacy evaluation. The models are based on the presumption that clinical considerations as well as limited resources will preclude treating for an indefinite length of time a person who has not shown improvement. This quantitative approach to decision making also suggests what types of data should be obtained in future research on clozapine.
