Abstract

The D4 dopamine receptor is activated by the catecholamine dopamine and is a member of the rhodopsin-like 7-transmembrane superfamily of receptors. D4 receptors belong to the D2-like dopamine receptor subfamily, which consists of the D2, D3, and D4 receptors. D4 receptors are found both post- and pre-synaptically in the nervous system and couple to heterotrimeric G _i/o proteins to inhibit adenylate cyclase and/or calcium channels or modulate potassium channels. The D4 receptor, along with the D3 receptor, is less abundant in comparison to the D2 receptor.
