Abstract

Recent technological advances in contrast echocardiography have resulted in its evolution from a research method to a clinical tool. One important hurdle to its widespread adoption is unfamiliarity with both the imaging protocols, and the complex coronary physiology that must be understood during perfusion imaging. In this issue, we have attempted to provide insights into the microbubble contrast agents, the specific imaging methods used, and coronary anatomy/physiology relevant to MCE. Clinical studies with contrast echocardiography in patients continue at a rapid pace and will likely establish the role of LVO and MCE in routine clinical practice. As we have indicated, the future of contrast echocardiography extends beyond its diagnostic capabilities into the realm of therapy.
