note = "Funding Information: A conference on {\textquoteleft}Placental Growth and Function{\textquoteright}, sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), took place in Rockville, Maryland, on 7-8 July 1994. The primary objective was to identify critical areas for both the continuation of current research and development of new research efforts. The need to clarify placental functions as they relate to the development of the fetus and successful reproduction is urgent. To develop successful approaches to placental dysfunction, it is necessary to understand how the placenta: (1) develops and functions normally; (2) adapts successfully to perturbations; and (3) malfunctions in certain pathological states.",
