All-optical oscillator based on a single bistable Vertical-Cavity Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (VCSOA)

Abstract

A novel all-optical oscillator is demonstrated for the first time by employing a cascadable VCSOA inverter in a closed optical loop, which generates a self-sustained square-like waveform with ∼80ps switching time and 5:1 extinction ratio.
